Greg Orman (1948 - 2009)
Greg was a highly talented musician and very nice gentleman.
Many of you know Greg from the NHBF 2008. He bought the prize Stambaugh single-cut 5.
While I have known Greg for only one year, we had become very close friends. We did not see each other outside of lessons or the occasional trip to Stambaugh's. Greg and I have very similar musical backgrounds. We are roughly the same age and grew up listening to the exact same albums and being influenced by the same music. We shared a common musical upbringing. He was so very musically talented.
Greg was a professional bassist for 20 years, playing on cruise ships. He has been playing classic rock gigs weekly for the past 10 years. He was so scared to come to the NHBF last year, but after his attendance, he gained hope of finding new musical growth.
Greg began taking private lessons last fall. I have never had a student with as much passion for music and the bass. He loved our study together, as he had never in his 40 years of playing had direction that made him feel like he was maximizing his potential. I agreed with that assessment. His progress over the last year was tremendous. He discovered the secrets to many of the musical challenges he had struggled with for years. Greg was on the edge of an incredible breakthrough. He was beginning to relax and let his love for music come out in his playing. Greg was also so thankful for my teaching and guidance, and I was so proud and touched to have made such a difference in his musical life. We had great musical plans for the future. I will miss Greg very much. He was a kindred spirit.
